TOUR # 18: HOVENWEEP NATIONAL MONUMENT

Trip Leader: Noreen R. Fritz

Description of Site/Tour: We will meet at the Hovenweep Visitors center located approximately an hour’s drive from Cortez, Co. From there the Group will walk the ruins loop at the Square Tower Unit, then drive out to the Holly and Horseshoe/Hackberry units to view those canyonhead communities as well. If time allows and participants are interested, we could also visit the Cajon unit or Cutthroat.

Meeting Place Location: Hovenweep Visitor Center (For directions go to: http://www.nps.gov/hove/planyourvisit/upload/HovenweepMap.pdf)

Tour times/Length: 9 AM to 1 PM

Other information: Four wheel drive (or at the very least “high clearance”) is required for accessing the outlying units. Carpooling will be necessary as there is limited parking space. If there has been rain, the roads to the outliers become impassable. Bring lots of drinking water! Late summer at Hovenweep is very HOT. Also sunscreen and a hat are advisable, and good walking/hiking shoes.
