TOUR # 3:BOULDER HOUSE & FORTIFIED SPUR

Description of Site/Tour
:  Visit three sites reported and described by Sylvanus G. Morley and Alfred V. Kidder
in “The Archaeology of McElmo Canyon-Part 1” (Palacio, 1917); an account of their explorations on behalf of the
School of American Research, directed by Dr. Edgar L. Hewett.  The sites, Boulder House (PIII), Fortified Spur (PI),
and Defensive Wall are located on the slope and top of Cannonball Mesa. 

Meeting Place Location
:  Meet in the parking lot at the M&M Truck Stop (which is closed) on the NE corner of the
junction of Highway 160 and the McElmo Canyon Road (Road G). 

Tour times/Length
:   9 AM to Noon 

Other information
:  The trip will involve a hot, steep, rough hike totaling about a mile.  Carpooling recommended. 
We may have the opportunity to meet the father and daughter who are the site stewards for Boulder House and learn
about the “Family Stewardship Program” from them.

Also Ross and Maiya Gralia, volunteers with the Canyons of the Ancients NM who are updating the documentation of Fortification Spur and the Defensive Wall, may accompany the tour.
